Eumelanin is the result of a gene called melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R). When this gene is fully activated, melanocytes in the skin and organs produce large amounts of brown/black eumelanins. When there’s an alteration or mutation in MC1R, melanocytes become relaxed and red/yellow pheomelanins are produced.
